The Western Province recorded one new case of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), increasing Papua New Guinea’s total cases to 834 in the last 24 hours.
A 48 year old male who is a mining contractor at Ok Tedi Mines was tested positive upon return to North Fly for work.
Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response, Mr David Manning, said the male did not experience symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing but swab samples returned positive.
The country’s COVID-19 cases as a result now stands at 834 with nine known deaths.
Sixteen provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 90,335,008 including 593,409 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
The death toll is 1,954,336; of which 12,295 were reported in the last 24 hours.
Mr Manning has repeated his calls for citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to the COVID-19 health protocols and the Niupela Pasin or New Normal under COVID-19.
“Let us not be complacent. Remember, we are a long way off from any sort of vaccination or a cure for COVID-19.
“The virus is said to be aggressively mutating and so our best defense is to ensure we protect ourselves by wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, avoiding crowds, coughing into our elbows, washing our hands regularly and ensuring regularly used surfaces are sanitised or washed,” Mr Manning said.
