Two new COVID-19 cases recorded in the National Capital District – PNG total at 583

A 34-year-old expatriate is one of the two new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases reported in the National Capital District (NCD) in the last 24 hours.

 The expatriate who arrived in the country on October 6 was experiencing chills and cough while in hotel quarantine.

He was immediately isolated in a health facility as soon as his COVID-19 test result came back positive.

The second case is a 21-year-old male who resides in Waigani. He was experiencing cough, fever, headache and loss of taste at the time of testing.

He is a contact of a known positive case.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning, says,  as a result, NCD  now has a total of 339 confirmed cases thus pushing the total confirmed cases for PNG to 583.

To date, PNG has tested 27,003 people for coronavirus. Additional 323 samples are pending laboratory results.

There are 545 people who have recovered from COVID-19 while  31 active cases  are currently being isolated. The country’s death toll from COVID-19 remains at seven.

Globally, since the start of the outbreak, there have been a total 40,626,763 confirmed cases and the death toll stands at 1,122,710.

There was an increase of 330,542 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

In the Western Pacific region, a total of 11 countries/territories had confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases for the region to 689,365 cases and 14,818 deaths.
