PNG records seven new COVID-19 deaths as country’s total cases reach 5,620

Papua New Guinea recorded seven new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours to 12 midday on Monday 29 March, increasing the country’s  death toll  to  56.

 

All seven deaths were reported in the National Capital District. A 36-year-old female is among the six men ages 42, 46, 60, 61, 67 and 71 who died from COVID-19. Controller of the National Pandemic Response and Police Commissioner,  David Manning, also confirmed  that  271 new cases of COVID-19 , were reported in the last 24 hours, increasing the country’s cases to 5,620.

Mr Manning said of the 271 cases, 221 infections were reported in Western Province; 25 in the National Capital District;  15 in Morobe  province;    three for Jiwaka province and one  in Central province. Western province alone    reported 221 new cases of which 197 are men, 15  women and nine unknown. Their ages range from 18 to 65 years. Two cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 213 cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

NCD reported 25 new cases of which 16 are  men  and nine females. The youngest is eight-years-old whilst the oldest is 67. Twelve cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 13 were asymptomatic at the time of testing. There were 15 new cases reported in the Morobe province of which 11 are males and four females.

Their ages range from 27 to 54. Fourteen cases were asymptomatic whilst one case showed symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing. Meanwhile, Jiwaka province reported three new cases whilst Central province reported a single case. All four cases, three from Jiwaka and a single case from Central are men  between the ages of 32 and  75 years.

The country’s COVID-19 cases as a result stands at 5,620 with 56 known deaths. Twenty provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

  • Western Province – 1,226;
  • West Sepik – 334;
  • Eastern Highlands – 251;
  • Morobe – 221;
  • West New Britain – 200;
  • East New Britain – 167;
  • Western Highlands – 118
  • AROB – 101;
  • New Ireland – 77;
  • Madang – 70;
  • East Sepik – 57;
  • Enga – 50;
  • Central – 45;
  • Simbu – 42;
  • Southern Highlands – 39;
  • Jiwaka – 29;
  • Hela – 20;
  • Gulf – 13; and
  • Milne Bay – 11.

Total – 5,620

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 126,359,540 including 565,997 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,769,473 of which 9,997 were reported in the last 24 hours.
