Papua New Guinea has recorded 87 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Friday April 30, increasing the total number of cases to 11,206.
The cases were reported from 16 districts in 10 provinces of which Madang reported the highest with 32 cases.
The National Capital District reported 12 cases, Simbu 28, West New Britain seven, Western Highlands ,two; Central two; Western one; Morobe one; Jiwaka one; and Southern Highlands, one.
Of the 87 cases, 59 were males and 28 females, with ages ranging between 11 to 80 years. At the time of testing, 60 cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 27 were asymptomatic.
Police Commissioner and Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning, said , 15 of the 87 new cases had underlying health issues.
“Three of them had to be hospitalised and one is on ventilator. Ten of the new cases had contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases, while 18 of the new cases are health care workers.”
Mr Manning said PNG’s COVID-19 cases now stand at 11,206 with 115 known deaths.
In the meantime, the country also recorded a total of 9,475 recoveries with 1,616 cases active within the last 14-day period.
A total of 93,283 tests have been conducted thus far with a further 1,000 samples pending laboratory results.

Mr Manning said delays in testing and reporting was still a challenge for the country’s COVID-19 response.
He says the Surveillance Team continues to conduct daily data cleaning on provincial tallies so some provincial totals may not add up from the previous day’s numbers.
Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 151,126,298 including 904,626 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is at 3,178,924 including 15,296 new deaths in the last 24 hours.
