PNG records 363 new COVID-19 cases increasing number of cases to 6,475

Papua New Guinea has recorded 363 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Thursday April 1, raising  the country’s total cases to 6,475.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning said that of the 363 confirmed cases, Western Province reported 64; National Capital District, 186; Morobe province , 8; East New Britain,  58; Simbu province, 21; Central, 11; Southern Highlands province, 8; Hela province, 2;  and one   each for   East Sepik, Enga, Jiwaka, Madang and New Ireland provinces.

Mr Manning said, of the  64  confirmed  cases in Western Province,   50 are males, 13 females and one not stated, with  their ages ranging  from nine  to 61 years old.

Six cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 52  persons  were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

From the  186 new cases in NCD, there were   96  males and 83 females with seven not stated, with  ages  between   21 and  67 years old.

Mr Manning added that 100  cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 64 were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

There were eight  positives reported in  Morobe,  of which five are males and three females, with ages ranging from 19 to 48 years. All eight cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

East New Britain province has 58 new confirmed cases   of which 27 are males, 29 females and two not stated. Their ages range from five to 63 years.

Forty-nine cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst nine were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

Mr Manning said Simbu province reported 21 new cases of which 13 are males, seven females and one not stated , and  their ages range from 17 years to 62. Nineteen cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst two cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.

Meantime, Central provinces reported 11 new cases of which six are males and five females, and their ages range from 27 to 67 years.

Four persons were asymptomatic whilst five showed symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.

In the Southern Highlands province there were  eight new cases reported, of which five are males and three females.

Their ages range from 36 to 60 years, and  they all  showed symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.

Hela province has conformed two males  who were  tested  positive  with  ages  ranging  from 38 to 53 years. The two men experienced  symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.

A single case each was reported in East Sepik, Enga, Jiwaka, Madang and New Ireland provinces.

Three of the cases were males whilst two were females between the ages of 30 and 67. Four  persons experienced  symptoms of COVID-19 whilst one was asymptomatic at the time of testing.

Mr Manning  said the country’s COVID-19 cases now stand at 6,475 with 60 known deaths.

To date, NCD has recorded 48 COVID-19 related deaths whilst West Sepik  has three deaths. West New Britain, Western Highlands and Western Province recorded two deaths each, whilst Enga, Jiwaka and Morobe one  death each, bringing the total number of deaths to 60.

Twenty provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

  • West Sepik – 327;
  • Morobe – 262;
  • Eastern Highlands – 250;
  • East New Britain – 224;
  • West New Britain – 201;
  • Western Highlands – 152;
  • AROB – 107;
  • New Ireland – 89;
  • Madang – 71;
  • Central – 70;
  • Simbu – 66;
  • East Sepik – 60;
  • Enga – 53;
  • Southern Highlands – 46;
  • Jiwaka – 33;
  • Hela – 23;
  • Gulf – 13; and
  • Milne Bay – 11.

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 127,877,462 including 509,746 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,796,561 of which 8, 855 were reported in the last 24 hours.
