Papua New Guinea has recorded 157 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Wednesday March 31, increasing the country’s total number of positive cases to 6,112.
Western Province reported 110 new cases of which 96 are males, 13 females and one not stated.
Their ages range from 21 years to 67. Two cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 102 cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.
Controller of the National Pandemic Response , David Manning, said there were 17 males who tested positive in the National Capital District. Their ages range from 22 years to 82. Six cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst 11 were asymptomatic at the time of testing.
Morobe province on the other hand, reported two new cases of which all cases are males, with ages ranging from 28 to 41 years. All two cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.
New Ireland province reported 11 new cases of which eight are males and three females, with ages ranging from 27 years to 71. Two cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst nine were asymptomatic at the time of testing.
East Sepik reported two new cases of which all cases are males, with ages ranging from 14 years to 41.
Mr Manning said the two cases were asymptomatic at the time of testing.
Meantime, Central provinces reported 13 new cases of which 11 are males and two females. Their ages range from 22 to 53 years. Nine cases were asymptomatic whilst four cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.
“A 43-year-old male is the latest to be confirmed positive in Hela province. He was showing symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.
“Also, a 53-year-old male is the latest to be confirmed positive in Jiwaka province. The 53-year-old was showing symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.”
The country’s COVID-19 cases now stand at 6,112 with 60 known deaths.
Meanwhile, NCD has recorded 48 COVID-19 related deaths whilst West Sepik has reported three deaths. West New Britain, Western Highlands and Western Province recorded two deaths each, whilst Enga, Jiwaka and Morobe recorded a death each respectively bringing the total number of deaths so far to 60.
Twenty provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

- West New Britain – 201;
- East New Britain – 166;
- Western Highlands – 152;
- AROB – 107;
- New Ireland – 88;
- Madang – 70;
- East Sepik – 59;
- Central – 59;
- Enga – 52;
- Simbu – 45;
- Southern Highlands – 38;
- Jiwaka – 32;
- Hela – 21;
- Gulf – 13; and
- Milne Bay – 11.
Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 have reached 127,349,248 including 427,964 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,787,593 of which 8, 156 were reported in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Wednesday March 31.
