PNG records 14th COVID-19 death as total cases reach 1,365

Papua New Guinea  today  recorded  its  14th COVID-19 death  as the country’s total confirmed cases reach  1, 365.

A 60-year-old male from the National Capital District is the latest reported COVID-19 death.  He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Port Moresby General Hospital on February 24  till his death on Monday.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning says the death comes as 49 new cases were reported around the country on March 1, bringing  its COVID-19 cases to 1,365.

Of the 49 cases, 13 were recorded  in the National Capital District; two in West Sepik; three in Morobe province; and 31 in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

In the NCD, nine males and six females, ages ranging from 28 to 62 years were tested positive.

Mr Manning said that 10  of the 15 cases showed symptoms whilst five were asymptomatic at the time of testing. Four cases came into contact with previous positive cases.

Mr Manning added that out of  31  cases reported in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, 18 are males and 13  females.

“The youngest of them was an eight-year-old whilst the oldest was 59. Twenty-two cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 whilst nine were asymptomatic at the time of testing. Nineteen of the cases had contact with previous positive cases.”

The Morobe province reported three new cases, all of which are  females between the ages of 30 and 38 years. Two of the three cases came into contact with previous positive cases.

The country’s COVID-19 cases now stand  at 1,365 with 14 known deaths.

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 113,467,303 including 384,959 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,520,550 of which 8,320 were reported in the last 24 hours.
