Papua New Guinea recorded 59 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) today (February 19), increasing the country’s total number to 1,029.
The latest cases were reported in Western Province, West Sepik and the National Capital District.
Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning, said, of the 59 cases, 47 were reported in Western Province, nine in West Sepik and three in the National Capital District.
“From the 47 cases in Western Province, 37 are males, nine females and one unknown. The youngest was an 11 year-old whilst the oldest was 53 years of age.
“Forty three of the 47 cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 virus whilst four did not show symptoms at the time of testing, and were all detected by the Ok Tedi Mine through testing at the entry point into Tabubil.”
Mr Manning added that nine cases were reported in West Sepik, of which seven were males and two females, with ages ranging from 18 to 65 years.
“Eight of the nine cases did not show symptoms of COVID-19 virus at the time of testing, however one person had symptoms of Covid-19 at the time of testing.
All nine cases are from the Vanimo Green electorate.
Meantime, three males were reported with confirmed COVID-19 infections in NCD, with ages ranging from 47 to 61 years.
Two of the three cases showed symptoms of COVID-19 virus whilst one did not at the time of testing.
Mr Manning said the three cases returned from a recent trip to Madang, Morobe and New Ireland provinces.
As of Friday 19 February 2021, the country’s COVID-19 cases stand at 1,029 with 10 known deaths.
A total of 47,490 people have tested for COVID-19, with 846 people having been recovered whilst 380 samples are pending testing at respective laboratories.
Mr Manning confirmed that 164 active cases are currently in isolation.
Seventeen provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have recorded cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

“Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 109,594,835 including 363,654 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,424,060 of which 9,619 were reported in the last 24 hours,” Mr Manning said.
