PNG’s total count of COVID-19 cases rises to 970

Papua New Guinea recorded nine new confirmed  cases of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Thursday 18 February increasing the country’s total cases to 970.

The latest cases were reported in East New Britain, Madang and the National Capital District.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning said that In East New Britain, a 26 year old and a 40 year old female  both resided  at Vunabuk area,  had tested  positive.

“They both did not show symptoms of the COVID-19 virus at the time of testing but swab samples returned positive.”

Mr Manning added that  five cases were reported n Madang, of which  four  are females and  one  male, with ages ranging between 31 and 59 years. The five persons  showed symptoms of COVID-19 virus at the time of testing.

While in NCD, two  positive cases were recorded in a  40 year old  male and a 61 year old female who reside in the Moresby North West electorate.  They both  showed symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.

The country’s COVID-19 cases as a result stands at 970 with 10 known deaths.

Seventeen provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have recorded cases. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

Meanwhile, the global  confirmed cases of COVID-19 have reached 109,217,366 including 348,150 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 2,413,912 of which 8,251 were reported in the last 24 hours.
