Two new COVID-19 cases reported – PNG total at 602

Papua New Guinea reported two new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases within the last 24 hours.

These cases bring the country’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 602, including seven known deaths.

One case is a 45-year-old female from the National Capital District (NCD) who was admitted to Port Moresby General Hospital for shortness of breath.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning, said the NCD rapid response team had commenced contact tracing whilst the patient  was being    isolated.

The other case is a 37-year-old male from Tabubil, Western Province who is an employee of Ok Tedi Mining Limited. He was asymptomatic, but swab samples have returned positive for COVID-19.

Mr Manning added that there were 24 mine workers identified as contacts of the case and they have all tested negative to COVID-19.

To date, PNG has tested 30,027 people for coronavirus. Additional 47 samples are pending laboratory results.

There have been 585 people who have recovered from COVID-19 whilst there are 10 active cases that are being isolated.

Fifteen provinces (including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville) have confirmed COVID-19 cases:

Globally, since the start of the outbreak, there have been 52,487,476 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,290,653 COVID-19 deaths reported to WHO.

There was an increase of 628,136 new cases and 9,623 new deaths in the last 24 hours.

In the Western Pacific Region, there has been a total of 787,994 confirmed cases, with 16,280 deaths.
