Hela reports first COVID-19 case while WNB records 4 new infections bringing PNG’s total to 597

Hela Province has reported its first coronavirus disease (COVID-19) case in a 30-year-old male from Tari Pori District.

West New Britain (WNB) also reported four new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. There were three males and one female, all from Talasea District.

Controller of the National Pandemic, David Manning said  all the cases reported today had symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing.

The rapid response teams of both Hela and WNB are conducting case investigations and contact tracing.

He added that to date, PNG has 597 cases and seven COVID-19 deaths.

The country has tested 29,466 people for coronavirus. Additional 60 samples are pending laboratory results.

There have been 580 people who have recovered from COVID-19 whilst 10 active cases  are  currently being isolated.

Meantime, fifteen provinces (including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville) have confirmed COVID-19 cases:

Globally, since the start of the outbreak, there have been a total 47,302,366 confirmed cases and the death toll stands at 1,210,896.

There was an increase of 461,570 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

In the Western Pacific Region, a total of 17 countries/territories had confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases for the region to 743,915 cases and 15,635 deaths.
