ENB reports new COVID-19 case – PNG’s total now at 656

A 20-year-old woman from East New Britain (ENB) is the latest case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Papua New Guinea, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 656.

The woman travelled by boat from West New Britain to Rabaul-Longbut in ENB. She was detected through routine testing at the point of entry.

She was not showing symptoms of the virus at the time of testing but swab samples have returned positive. All other travellers on the same boat were tested negative.

East New Britain’s total COVID-19 cases, as a result, increased to  three..

To date, 16 of the 22 provinces in the country have confirmed cases of COVID-19. The distribution of the cases is as follows:

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 61,869,330, including 564,813 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 1,448,896; of which 8,985 were reported in the last 24 hours.

The Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response , Mr David Manning has again called upon the people of PNG to continue to be vigilant and take all precaution against COVID-19.

Mr Manning said, “Without a cure our only defence is practicing good hygiene and following all the COVID-19 health protocols: avoid crowds and wear face masks in public places. If you feel sick please visit your nearest health centre and get tested.”
