43 new COVID-19 cases detected, total infections at 17,637

FORTY THREE  new COVID-19 cases  were  recorded in the last 24 hours, ending 12 midday on Thursday July 22, increasing the total number of cases to 17,637.

The cases were reported in seven provinces, with Madang and Western Highlands reporting  the highest of 15 cases each , followed by Manus with five cases. East New Britain  four, Southern Highlands two,  whilst New Ireland and Jiwaka reported a single case each.

 Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning,  said,  of the 43 cases, 31 were males whilst 12 were females, with ages  between 17 and 72 years.

At the time of testing, 22 cases were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.There were no new deaths reported today.

Of the cases recorded today:

· 33% of cases was diagnosed in the last 24 hours and are all from Madang Province where a localised outbreak is going on within a guard-dog compound in the Ramu area;

· 25% were from the last 6-14 days while 42% were from over 30 days ago; and

· From among the cases diagnosed more than 30 days ago, 83% of them were from WHP and were reported to have been diagnosed more than (2) months ago.

Mr Manning said  the country’s COVID-19 cases now stand at 17,637 with 192 known deaths, whilst   cumulative recoveries stand at 17,222.

To date, a total of 143,687 people have tested for COVID-19.

All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases.

Since the vaccination program rolled out in May this year a total of 74,771 people have received the first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.  This includes:

· 8,447 health workers;

· 48,693 essential workers; and

· 17,631 with comorbidity.

So far  83,123 doses have been administered with 74,771 persons receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Mr Manning also confirmed that  8,352 people have been fully vaccinated.

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 192,782,768 including 548,226 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 4,141,872 including 8,499 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.(PNG COVID-19 statistics as of Thursday 22nd July 2021.)
