29-year old contractor tested positive for COVID-19

A 29-year old male from Port Moresby is the latest case in the country who tested positive for COVID-19.

A contractor who resides at Gerehu Stage 6 had headache and shortness of breath. He was tested at Rita Flynn and is now isolated in the facility. He is also undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.

The case had no travel history and no known contact with positive cases.

The latest reported case brings the total confirmed COVID-19 cases in PNG to 527. The confirmed deaths from COVID-19 remain at seven.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response, Mr David Manning  said the rapid response team is conducting case investigation and identifying his contacts so they can be quarantined.

Meanwhile, Mr Manning has expressed concern over the latest surge in the number of confirmed cases in the nation’s capital.

“This latest case highlights that we are all vulnerable to COVID-19. It can affect people of all ages, including the young members of our community.

“The virus does not discriminate and can strike any member of our community so let us all remain vigilant,” Mr Manning said.

To date, 13 provinces in the country have confirmed cases: NCD (312); Western Province (189); Central (7); Morobe (5); East Sepik (3); East New Britain (2); West New Britain (2); Milne Bay (2); and one case each from Southern Highlands, Eastern Highlands, West Sepik, New Ireland and Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Globally, the total confirmed cases are now 31,216,854 and the death toll stands at 964,724. There was an increase of 239,283 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

In the Western Pacific region, a total of 12 countries/territories had confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases for the region to 581,446 cases and 12,717 deaths.
