221 new COVID-19 cases reported: total cases at 13,928

Papua New Guinea has recorded 221 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Friday, May 14, increasing the total number of cases to 13,928.

The cases were reported in 15 provinces with Western Highlands province reporting the highest  with  49 cases, followed by the National Capital District with 35 cases, Enga 31, Morobe 26, Northern  25, West Sepik nine,  Western province , 8; East New Britain, 8; Central 7,  Hela seven cases each, East Sepik, New Ireland and Gulf four cases each, West New Britain three cases and Milne Bay a single case.

Of the 221 cases recorded, 141 were males and 79 were females. Their ages range between two to 76 years. At the time of testing, 124 cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Papua New Guinea has to date carried out 110,286 COVID-19 tests. Of this 13,928 are confirmed cases including 136 known deaths. As of Friday May 14, a total of 11,198 people have recovered with 2,594 cases active within the last 14-day period.

The majority of PNG’s confirmed cases or 7,055 are males whilst 35 per cent or 3,919 are females. To date a total of 5,484 people confirmed with COVID-19 were symptomatic and 2,240 had comorbidities.

All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases.

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 have reached 160,074,267 including 745,256 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is at 3,325,260 including 13,262 new deaths in the last 24 hours ending Friday May 14.

The PNG vaccination program commenced on May 5 and has been rolled out in 16 provinces thus far. To date a total of 11,537 people have been vaccinated. A large number of them, 8,930 are essential workers whilst 2,607 are health workers.
